As Christians’, prayer is perhaps the most crucial thing that we can do to impact our world for the Gospel. My challenge is that each of you would take the time to pray for the 32 countries participating. A few general ideas of things that you can pray for:

Pray for the missionaries serving in these nations. In many of the countries, missionaries face various hardships and obstacles.

Pray that more nations would take up the call to missions.

Pray for the churches of the nations, that they would be strong and unified.

And above all, pray that Jesus would be glorified in our lives, our churches and our ministries.

This may sound like a silly idea to some of you, but I assure you that the World Cup does have an impact on the World. During the 1994 World Cup, 4 Brazilians become Christians. This year, warring faction in the Ivory Coast have declared a "cease-fire" while their country plays in the Cup. I use gmail for all my personal e-mails, I have Google Analytics for my websites, and I am a big fan of Picasa for organizing my photos. So it is no surprise that I have started using three more of Google's services. The three new services are:

 Google Calendar (obviously an online calendar.)
 Google Page Creator (Google’s new webpage design service.)
 Google Notebook (sort of a place to put notes from webpages.)

Here is a simple breakdown of the three services.

Google Calendar:
Most of you are probably saying, “yea another calendar program?” And you would be correct. Google calendar is just another calendar, it does have a few features that I like. For starters, it integrates well with my e-mail client of choice, gmail. I can set it up to e-mail me reminders of events I have scheduled in G-Cal. There is an online sharing aspect that can be good for families, ministries, and anytime people need to see what you are up to. You can decide who can see your calendar and what details they can see. You can make it so that people can see what event you have scheduled or simply see you as busy.

You can also create invitations, send out reminders and keep track of RSVPs inside Google Calendar. There are also many public calendars available to integrate into your. For example, I have added into my calendar: 2006 World Cup schedule, Christias holidays, and both US and Brazilian holidays. Each calendar category is color coded, so I will never get Brazilian Fathers Day and US Father’s Day confused. Another feature I like is the ability to uncheck a category. If, for example, you only wanted to see events for a particular family member, then you could uncheck all but that person’s, comes in handy if you have an active family.

Google Page Creator
This is a new one for me, so I am still learning the features, but basically, this is a very simple WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) webpage creator. It comes with about 45 templates (most are variation of the same theme) and four basic layouts that can be applied to each page. The templates have the feel and look of blogs and in fact are quite a bit plainer than what Google offers in Blogger. Your account is limited to 100mb at this time, probably more than enough for a family webpage. I was limited in what I could do. For example, I wanted to turn an icon/photo into a hyperlink, but to my knowledge, that ability is not present in Page Creator. In fact, the controls available in Page Creator are not much more than what you find in Blogger. Over all Google Page Creator is a very basic program and is probably best used by people who know next to nothing about HTML or web design. For those with a bit more knowledge, I recommend Nvu. A free alternative to FrontPage and Dreamweaver.

Google Notebook:
Now this is an app I think I can get behind. So far, Google Notebook is a Firefox only plugin, but I hope you all are using the far superior Firefox web browser. You could file this under “note taking” or “sermon/lesson prep.” If you are like me, then you spend a lot of time surfing the web. Many times, when I am researching material for a lesson, sermon, project, blog, etc., I will visit dozens of websites and do tons of Google Searches. Keeping all that information organized has always been hard for me. In the past, I have simply bookmarked a page for future reference, but then my bookmarks folder just get more and more cluttered. (I even have a folder labeled ‘websites to check our later.’ It currently has 14 link!)

Enter Google Notebook, a sort of note storage system for the web. As you surf through the web and find information you want to use later, Google Notebook allows you to simply highlight the information, right click and select “Note this.” They are then added into your Notebook, sort of like clipping an article from the newspaper or magazine. You can choose to make them public so that other might see them or not.
Since this post is getting long, I think I will be a bit lazy and simply cut and paste Google description:

 Clip useful information.
You can add clippings of text, images and links from web pages to your Google Notebook without ever leaving your browser window.
 Organize your notes.
You can create multiple notebooks, divide them into sections, and drag-and-drop your notes to stay organized.
 Get access from anywhere.
You can access your Google Notebooks from any computer by using your Google Accounts login.
 Publish your notebook.
You can share your Google Notebook with the world by making it public.

While these services are good, none are great, and by themselves, I probably would not use them much. However, I hope, pray and anticipate the day that Google seamlessly integrates these programs together. I want to be able to check my e-mail, click a tab and review my notebook, click a second tab and be updating my blog. Since these projects are all still in beta (I sometimes wonder if a Google app ever leave beta!), I expect improvements. Who knows, we may see a Google app suite that rival MS Office. And if it remains free….then wouldn’t that be sweet!

eBible.com invites to hand out.

Mark Sears over at eBible was very generous and hooked my up with an invite to eBible.com! The great news is that this is not some stunt to make some cash on their recent popularity spike, but rather a charity auction to raise money for their mission trip to Nepal.

The money from this auction will go towards the purchasing of stoves for families in Nepal.
Many homes in Nepal have very unsafe stoves, or no stoves at all. In homes without stoves, cooking is often done over an open fire. This leads to very poor air quality, and as a result, children develop respiratory conditions very early on in life. By providing stoves to families, we hope to improve their lives in a very practical way.

So if you really want one of those invites OR you have some tithe money you would like to give, then this would be a perfect opportunity for you to further the work of Jesus Christ in Nepal. Not to mention you can get in early on what will likely be a pretty cool web/bible app. Oh, and did I mention you also get a really swank t-shirt?

eBible Blog
eBay Auction page

God Bless
and as soon as I get an invite for myself, I will hand out any that I am given here.

New online Bible tool

I have used several of the various online Bible sites. I really like the NET bible as a new and modern translation that has the readability of the NIV and the accuracy of the NASB. But there is a new evangelist on the block and he is preaching the Word with a host of Web 2.0 goodness and his name is eBible
TechCrunch has only a slightly blasphemous article describing some of the features that will be incorporated into eBible.

Search any of a number of versions of the Bible with eBible by keyword (and switch between Bible versions once you’ve selected text you are interested in). eBible pulls additional information relevant to your query from a library of Bible reference sites, such as dictionaries, topicals, encyclopedias, handbooks, etc. Expert commentary is also included in the margin of Biblical text.

Currently in Beta and by invite only (anyone want to pass me and invite pretty please) eBible will hopefully offer more resources than your average online bible site. The idea is to allow a person to search passage of scripture, have eBible pull up your query as well as bring up extra biblical resources such as commentaries, bible dictionaries, lexicons and various other bible study aids.

The one problem I anticipate is a lack of mainstream modern resources and bible translations. Almost anyone can include Strong’s numbers or the KJV in a program because they lack any licensing fees. The NIV, Bible Knowledge Commentary, the Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich Greek/English are all excellent translations and/or bible reference, but each has a fee for use. I did notice that the screen shot at the TechCrunch article has the NASB listed.

UPDATE: The article got "dugg" at digg.com, so expect some heavy traffic and possible the websites to be down. This happens a lot to sites that get "dugg" and were not prepared for it.

Who's linking to me?

Ever wondered who, if anyone, was linking to your website? In other word's, sometimes a low tech is actually better and easier way to accomplish a task than the miriad of gadjets and programs we compiled on our hard drive. So from time to time, I plan to blog on on of these "unplugged" methods that migh be of benifet to ther missionaries and ministers.
Case in point, is the lost art of writing a proper thank you note. (and by writing, I mean actually using a pen or pencil and a piece of paper.) I am guilty myself of typing my fair share of thank you letters (mainly due to my horrible hand writing and the fact that I Brazil) but I plan to to find a way to be able to write and mail my thank you letters rather than e-mail or type them.
So I hope you all enjoy the artcile I found on writing great thank you notes.

How To How to Write a Thank-You Note
by Leslie Harpold

Let's be honest folks, letter writing is a lost art. Most of do not even spell check our e-mails before we send them, let alone spend much thought into how we say what we say. We've developed abbreviations for about everything. A long e-mail for most of us is one that consists of at least one complete sentence. And I don’t mean an e-mail that has several thoughts joined together by my favorite punctuation…the all famous triple period…! (It’s as if inserting the triple period allows us to break all rules of punctuation.)

If you are in the ministry, especially if you raise your own support, then you know how often we find our selves needing to write thank you notes. We tend to put them of until we have several stacked up. We all know how hard it can be it can be to write a proper thank you note, let alone get them sent out in timely fashion. I myself and very guilty of beginning the majority of my thank you notes with, “I am sorry this is so late but__”

We all wish that thank you notes were easier to write. After all, most of us do not lack for words to speak, it’s the getting them onto paper part that we struggle with. I am not looking for a one size fits all template or a cut and paste approach to writing a thank you note, rather most I seek to find the best words that accurately and honestly express my genuine gratitude for someone’s generosity.

That is why I found Leslie Harpold’s article, on TheMorningNews.com website, so beneficial. She divides a thank you note up into 6 separate parts. She clearly states what should to be included and what should not in each of those section. If you are like me, just getting started can be a struggle and often once we get started, we struggle with saying more than just, “hey, thanks for the cool gloves.” If you follow the six points on Harpold’s article, more than likely you will never lack for not only enough things to say, but the “what” will be both thoughtful and honest.

Good Luck and don't forget to send me a thank you note!

Jason

The 20 Most Important Tools Ever

Not exactly tech related, but interesting none the less. Forbes.com has produced a list of the 20 Most Important Tools Ever made. I must say, that I am just as happy with it now as I was when I first set it up. Ian Austen with the New York Times wrote an excellent article on home computer synchronization and FolderShare was one of the three programs discussed. It was very insightful and confirmed some suspicions that I had, namely that at time FolderShare was eating up my bandwidth. Anyway, take a look at the article. If you have not tried FolderShare I encourage you to, especially if you travel and need to access your home computer. One extra note for you Mac users out there, the NYT article also discusses a Mac sync software program.

God Bless
Jason

Firefox 1.5 released

Firefox, the nest web browser on the planet, has just released a major update. Version 1.5 was released yesterday and can be downloaded from their website, Mozilla.com. Here are some of the new or improved features:

Faster Browsing: improvements to the engine that powers Firefox deliver more accurate display of complex web sites, support for new Web standards, and better overall performance.

Automatic Updates: Firefox automatically downloads small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed.

Tabbed Browsing: Use tabbed browsing to open multiple web pages in a single browser window, and quickly flip back and forth. Drag and drop open tabs to keep related pages together.

Live Bookmarks: Stay up to date with your favorite Web sites and blogs. Use Live Bookmarks that update themselves automatically with the latest content from the Web.

Customize Firefox: Select new button controls for your toolbars, install extensions to add new features, or change the look of your browser with themes - the way Firefox looks and works is under your control.

I simply love Firefox and the ability to customize it as I like through themes and extensions. I'll do a post soon on what extensions I use, but feel free to post in the comments what Extensions and Themes you use for Firefox.

Happy Surfing!
Jason

OpenCD Project

TheOpenCD.org project is a fantastic site. OpenCD is a collection of Open Source software, many of which I am already using. They have everything from web browsers (Firefox) to image editors (Gimp) Here is their blurb about TheOpenCD:

TheOpenCD is a collection of high quality Free and Open Source Software. The programs run in Windows and cover the most common tasks such as word processing, presentations, e-mail, web browsing, web design, and image manipulation. We include only the highest quality programs, which have been carefully tested for stability and which we consider appropriate for a wide audience.
I want to point out that just because the software is free and open source, does not mean that is cheap and poorly produced. In fact, many of these projects are labors of love. Firefox and OpenOffice, the two most popular Open Source Programs have had such an amazing impact on the community that Microsoft is adopting aspects of FF and OO into IE7 & Office 12.
Open Source is more a philosophy that anything else. The people behind these projects believe that the software code should be left open to the public. Because of this, anyone with coding knowledge can create "extensions" or "plugins." This means that the software will be continually improved upon and made better.
As Christians, we can have Bible Study Toolbars for Firefox, Christian RSS feeds for Thunderbird, and anything else a creative believer thinks would be an asset.
Here are the programs that I am currently using:

Firefox (the greatest web browser, I've been using it since version .4!)

Thunderbird (since version .3)

Audacity (a fantastic MP3 editor)(you will need the LAME extension to convert the files back from Audacity to MP3, but it is no big deal.)

PDF Creator

I'd be suing OpenOffice and Gimpif I had not already purchased MS Office 2003 and Paintshop Pro, but for people on a budget, these can be a huge budget savor. Give these programs a try. If you don't like them, your not out any money!

God Bless
Jason

Track your Web Site Traffic

There are a lot of great services and programs available to track the traffic to you website, and many of them are free. Here is a list of three that I have used. Some are more advanced, while others are pretty basic.

GVist: gvist is a fun site tracker that utilizes Google Maps. It does not track much, nor does it give you a lot of surfer information, but it is fun to see the little push pins around the world for people who have been to your site. Gvist is free, but with a donation of any amount they will upgrade your account to show you the last 100 visitors instead of 20.

StatCounter: A free yet reliable invisible web tracker, highly configurable hit counter and real-time detailed web stats. Insert a simple piece of our code on your web page and you will be able to analyze and monitor all the visitors to your website in real-time.

Google Analytics: Google Analytics is by the most advanced (free) statcounter I have seen and probably more advanced than many you would pay for. Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. It tells you things like what web browser your visitors use, what the screen resolutions is, and if the have flash and java capabilities.Currently, Google analytics is not registering new acocunts. Seems they were getting such a demand that they where forced to cap their registrations at 234,725. I was one of the lucky ones to get in early, but I imagine that they will soon open it back up or at least do an invite system like they did with g-mail early on.

Ministry Tech Blog renamed to "Missionary Tech"

I have decided to rename this blog "Missionary Tech." Simply put, this great program allows you to do several things:

set up your own 2 person peer to peer network.

sync files from one computer to another.

Access your computer or device remotely.

Currently, I use this program to keep my laptop and desktop synched together. I keep all my important files on my desktop, but since many of them are updated on a regular basis (my supporter database for example) it can be a real hassle keeping two sets of data up to date. Not to mention I often take my laptop with me to coffee shops when I prep for a Sunday school class or other lesson. In the past, I would have to dump my PowerPoint or Word doc onto a thumb drive to move it from one computer to another. With Folder Share, you can tell the system what files and folder to "sync up" and it will automatically update both systems. It became popular in late 2004, largely due to automatic downloading of audio onto portable players or personal computers.

Basically, a podcast is like your own personal talk radio show. I hope to soon have a podcast version of our MobilizingBrazil.com newsletter so all our supporter can listen to us tell brief stories regarding our ministry.

Below are two great resources for getting started in Podcasting. The CNET "Weekend Project" is very basic and will give you a quick tutorial. Hopefully after watching their video you can decide if this is something your want to invest in. The Systm Video done by Kevin Rose and Dan Huard is much more in depth and should give you a all the information you will need to get your own podcast up and running.

CNET Weekend Project

System Podcast Episode

Did you ever want to dig a hole to China

If I dig a very deep hole!

While not entirely ministry tech related, this is a very original and funny use of Google Maps. Some ingenious Brazilian grad student has made a scrip that will show you where your "hole to China" would end up on the globe. So far I keep hitting water. The cool thing about this, and other similar programs, it that is shows the potential for Google Maps.

For the church, it would be great to see a Google Maps script that shows population densities, Christian churches, or missionary presence.
It reminds me of Romans 15:20
"It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation."

How Awesome would it be if we could see the concentration (or lack thereof) of Christian ministry presence. Constable, Th.D. Department Chairman and Senior Professor of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Dr. Constable is one of the Godliest men I know and a wonderful teacher. His notes are the most complete collection of commentary on all 66 books of the bible. His notes on each book of the bible are free to download and so are his audio lectures.

His notes take into account the opinions and viewpoints from various theological perspectives. They have a wealth of knowledge of biblical cultural, Greek and Hebrew, and draw on Dr. Constables decades of ministry.

To this day, I do not teach on a passage of scripture with looking to these notes to help me better understand God's Word.

Net Bible
www.netbible.com

The Net Bible, or the New English Translation, is a great version of the bible that you can dowload for free.

The NET Bible (New English Translation) is a completely new translation of the Bible, not a revision or an update of a previous English version. It is being completed by more than twenty biblical scholars who are working directly from the best currently available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. The translation project originally started as an attempt to provide an electronic version of a modern translation for electronic distribution over the Internet and on CD-Rom. Anyone anywhere in the world with an Internet connection will be able to use and print out the NET Bible without cost for personal study. In addition, anyone who wants to share the Bible with others can print unlimited copies and give them away free to others.

Their website also has a few hundred bible studies, illustrations, and preaching outlines available. There are some fee based services, but most of their material is free to use. I personally have used the study outlines and notes in my teaching series on the 7 Churches in Revelation.

Life Church
www.lifechurch.tv

While not necessarily a Bible study aid, Life Church has all of there web cast presentations available for viewing. Life Church has a unique ministry. They are "One Church" with "several locations" around Oklahoma and elsewhere. Each church has care pastors and worship teams that minister to the needs of their local church. On Sunday services, the message is delivered through a web cast and projected up on big screens.

All of the sermon series are packaged online for anyone to watch. The preaching is excellent and I often use them as a devotional time. My wife has been blessed on numerous occasions by Pastor Craig Groeschel teaching. The technological delivery is fantastic. I have not seen a crisper video and listened to clearer audio before.

The window the video plays in is divided into four quads. One for the video, one for the theme art work of the message or series. The third quad is the PowerPoint slides. As the sermon advances, so do the slides. A neat feature allows you to skip ahead in the sermon by advancing the slides. The last quad is for taking notes or e-mailing

Free security programs for your computer

Ad-aware
Ad-aware is a great program for cleaning out spy-ware from your computer.

Ad-Aware

There is a pay for version that has a few more bells and whistles, but this link is for their free version that does everything you will need it to do.

AVG Anti-virus

Grisoft has a great free antivirus program. Here is how Troy describes his program:

TntMPD is a free program for managing your relationships with your ministry partners. Although anyone might find it useful, it is designed specifically for missionaries who raise their own support. The hope in sharing TntMPD with you is that you, a fellow missionary, will have more time to do what God has called you to do.

I have used TntMPD for several years now. For a while it acted mainly as a glorified address book for me. But now that my wife and I are actively raising and living on support, TntMPD has become an invaluable tool. It helps me easily keep track of my donors, current support levels, late reports....etc. TntMPD is a must have for anyone who raises their own support. Troy continues to make improvements and no doubt this program will continue to be tweaked and improved for years to come.

Skype
www.skype.com
Skype is a great and free Voice Over Internet Program, or VOIP. With a broadband connection, Skype acts much like an Instant Messenger program, but with voice chat capabilities. My wife and I use Skype to talk with friends and family around the world....and did I mention it was free!
My wife and I have made hundreds of phone calls to family in Brazil over the years. No doubt we have spent hundreds of dollars on phone cards and long distance charges. With Skype, the cost is ZERO. The quality is just as good, if not better than a traditional phone line.

Things you will need:
* Broadband internet connection.
* Speakers for your computer.
* Microphone for your computer. (my Dell laptop comes with a built in mic, cheek to see if yours does.)

(your friends and family will need to have all of the above to use Skype for free. There is a way for you to call a traditional phone line for a fee using SkypeOut, but why bother if you can use the internet)

A few other programs have entered the market to compete with Skype. Google has Google Talk (Google Talk) and Yahoo has added voice into their latest Yahoo! IM client. (Yahoo! IM) I have both, but have only used Google Talk for voice. It worked really well. I would recommend that as a missionary or ministry worker, you get them all.
